american haiku #37

it’s a hot muggy
july night
in pennsylvania
i cannot sleep

a cow coughs
in the dark
just like a person

walking from my bed
to the bathroom window
lightning bugs are
hovering
on the lawn

everyone is asleep
but me
i hear
my brothers
snoring softly

it’s a lonely feeling

a blackbird sings in the
lush evening
or maybe
it’s a mockingbird

in all of eighteen years
there has never been a night
like tonight

a detail
and a remembrance

of the rosetta stone
a missing link
returning ever to
the cavity of a missing tooth
and the mystery

that will make
everything click.
